Flood, Earthquake, Landslide, or Tsunami? Which insurance covers them?
Does Earthquake Insurance cover Tsunamis? Does it cover Landslides?
What Homeowners Insurance does not cover: Your standard homeowners insurance, also called Fire or DP3 dwelling fire insurance policy, does not cover earth movement or incoming water. However, you can purchase additional endorsements or policies to cover those risks.
Here’s how those different risks are covered:
Flood: Incoming Water from the bottom up. This could be a city pipe breaking and flooding your home, a storm surge, or flood waters from the creek behind your house. A separate policy is needed to cover this risk.
Earthquake: Earth movement, tremors, and any other damages directly caused by the earthquake (ex: fire). Depending on your property, this coverage could be added to your current home insurance policy, or you might need a separate policy.
Tsunami: not typically covered under earthquake, but could be covered under flood, depending on the specific policy. Make sure to check with us if this is an important part of a flood policy for you.
Landslide: Also not typically covered under earthquake and is usually part of a flood event. Some flood policies cover landslides. Check with us on if your flood policy does cover landslides.
Back up of Sewer & Drain: When your sewer line backs up or fails, this is also considered incoming water from the bottom up. Most standard home insurance policies have an “endorsement” you can purchase without the need for a separate policy.
